FIRE BURNING AND EDUCATION

Things to know before burning:

  • Check https://www2.deq.idaho.gov/air/aqipublic/map/outdoorburn to find any restrictions because of air quality.
  • Every burn outside of a burn barrel requires a permit (NO COST) just call Fire Official at 208-720-2076
  • Burning only during daylight hours no open flames after sunset
  • Backyard burn pits/campfires are exempt from permit but must be only 2ft around and 18” high maximum.
  • Idaho Code doesn’t allow anyone to burn on someone else’s property, including state, county, or city.
  • Limit burning when winds are over 12 mph.
  • Only burn materials that have dried out sufficiently.
  • Ensure the fire has plenty of oxygen.
  • Do not allow burn piles to smolder.
  • Leaves and grass clippings can be taken to a landfill rather than burned.
  • Avoid burning when atmospheric conditions such as inversions will limit smoke dispersion.
  • Things that are allowed under the conditions listed above: residential burn barrels, recreational fires (campfires, backyard fire pits), weed control along fence lines, and ditch banks.
  • Things that are not allowed under any circumstances: Garbage, plastics, dead animals, animal waste, junk motors, tires, and other rubber material, construction material such as asphaltic materials, tar and petroleum materials, paints, treated wood, and insulated wire, or any trade waste.

What do I need to do before burning weeds, along fence lines or any larger burn pile:

  • Contact the local fire chief at 208-720-2076
  • Give him a date and approximate time of burning so he is aware in case someone calls it in to 911
